The Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, in partnership with PUC Gradska čistoća Belgrade, aims to address the challenges of climate change through a novel approach that utilizes mosses for carbon sequestration. This initiative focuses on greening and revitalizing devastated areas, particularly closed communal waste cassettes, using moss carpets. These carpets, made from waste elements such as textiles and other industrial by-products, serve as substrates for moss growth. The osses will absorb carbon diixide produced by waste decomposition, slow down climate change through carbon sequestration, and turn harsh environments into bio-beds that enable the establishment of other organisms. The project taps into the unique biological characteristics of mosses, which are photosynthetically active during the winter and capable of absorbing more carbon dioxide than an average tree. The project is projected to run from 25 November 2023 to 24 November 2024.
