The project “SPINBIO – Electrospun membranes based on bacterial nanocellulose obtained from plastic waste enriched with compounds obtained from food processing by-products as a new bioactive material” aims to develop an innovative, bio-based material by upcycling plastic waste from 3D printing and bioactive compounds derived from food processing waste. Through advanced microbial fermentation and electrospinning technology, the project will produce electrospun membranes based on bacterial nanocellulose with enhanced functional and bioactive properties. The resulting material is intended for applications in active packaging and biomedicine, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials. By integrating two waste streams into a single circular production process, the project reduces waste generation, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and decreases reliance on non-renewable resources. The project will deliver a validated prototype of a novel bioactive membrane with strong potential for further scaling and market application, contributing to circular economy transition and sustainable material innovation in Serbia.
