The project “SustainaBelle” aims to introduce an innovative circular model in traditional ajvar production by transforming food processing waste into a new biodegradable product, the BioSponge. BioSponge is a kitchen sponge/cloth made from organic residues generated during pepper and ajvar processing, combined with natural binders to replace plastic and chemical cleaning products. By upcycling biowaste that would otherwise end up in landfills, the project reduces food waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and improves resource efficiency. The initiative also supports social inclusion by engaging rural women in the local, handcrafted production of the BioSponge and strengthening their skills and income opportunities. In parallel, the project improves operational efficiency through the introduction of basic automation and digital tracking of material flows. Expected results include a pilot production batch of BioSponge units, reduced biowaste from ajvar production, and the establishment of a replicable circular economy model at the community level.
