The working conference entitled “Integrating Circular Economy Goals into Local Waste Management Plans – Challenges and Possible Solutions” was held at the “Zira” hotel. The event brought together experts, institutional representatives, and stakeholders to discuss the integration of circular economy principles into local waste management strategies.
The conference was opened by Aleksandra Vučinić, head of the Circular Economy and Sustainable Development Department at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and Ana Mitić Radulović, a representative of the UNDP office in Serbia. Both emphasized the importance of incorporating circular economy goals into waste management plans to achieve sustainable development and environmental protection.
The first part of the event focused on local capacities for circular economy development planning. Discussions covered strategic planning and investment initiatives in pilot municipalities, financial aspects, and expected results, as well as innovative approaches and practical solutions for improving local waste management practices. An overview of the progress achieved in adopting circular economy principles in seven pilot municipalities was provided, along with future strategic priorities. Additionally, an analysis of the current state of circular economy implementation in four specific municipalities was presented, identifying key areas for improvement. Practical examples from Novi Pazar and Pancevo demonstrated the successful integration of circular economy elements into their waste management plans.
In the second part of the conference, an overview of the key challenges in planning and applying the principles of the circular economy was given. Participants engaged in group work to identify obstacles and propose solutions.
The conference concluded with a summary of key findings and proposed actions.
