The Fruit Waste for Cleaner Air and GHG Emission Reduction project, implemented by the Public Utility Company “Osečina” in Serbia, addresses environmental challenges by replacing fossil fuel-based heating systems with biomass alternatives. The initiative leverages pruned waste from fruit orchards, specifically raspberry plantations, to produce heating chips as a renewable energy source. The overarching goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality for 12,200 residents in Osečina, and establish a circular economy model where ash from the biomass process can be reused as fertilizer. The project's scope includes the purchase and installation of specialized equipment for chipping pruned orchards and conducting workshops to educate local agricultural households.
